It’s that time again! SDCC 2023 is next week and Bandai Tamashii Nations have graced us with early copies of the upcoming exclusives. S.H. Figuarts Dragon Ball items include three repaints of previously released figures, all with special deco and accessories. Raditz & Kid Gohan, Super Saiyan Goku & Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, and Majin Vegeta will join your shelves soon (hopefully).
Bandai reps let us know that the ordering process for obtaining them at SDCC is now live. It’s very similar to last year. You’ll go outside the convention center, behind it actually, where there will be a Dragon Ball World Tour event set up at the Marina Terrace by the Marriott (it’s big, see our pics from last year). Stand in line there to get tickets for the right to stand in line INSIDE during the show within a given time frame. You can then purchase your exclusives at booth #3329. More details are available at the official website for the event here. No word yet on non-attendee options online later, but they did offer SDCC pieces last year after the show and at other events via Premium Bandai.
So with that, let’s take a look at the San Diego Comic Con 2023 S.H. Figuarts Dragon Ball exclusives!
S.H.Figuarts SDCC 2023 Box and Group Shots
Let’s get the obligitory box shots out of the way. They’re pretty. All 3 stay in line with the design style used on exclusives for the last several years.
S.H.Figuarts RADITZ & SON GOHAN -KID- -Exclusive Edition-
So I don’t think anyone was asking for a new Raditz. I WAS asking for smaller versions of the kids though, and still am. So this set was a must for me because I want that tike Gohan. He’s got some articulation, head, tail, fists, plus face swap parts, but otherwise static. I would like this done for other kids in the line like Trunks and Gotenks, other versions of Gohan, and even baby Pan. I think doing these combined with non-fighters like Bulma, Chi-Chi, King Kai, etc would work great to fill in the line. Oh yeah, Raditz is cool too. New colors, but either will work on a shelf display as primary.
S.H.Figuarts SUPER SAIYAN SON GOKU & SUPER SAIYAN 2 SON GOHAN -Exclusive Edition-
This is the hot one. Very cool tribute set for that epic scene in the cartoon. Gohan gets a richer color palette. Hair is translucent. Some battle damage markings on the skin. He also comes with peg hands to hold the Kamehameha energy effect outward with one hand, which is awesome. That wasn’t in the original. Goku is a translucent blue ghost version of the Full Power recent release. No major changes to the figure, just the color. No happy face. You can recreate the iconic moment perfectly. Overall 10/10, perfect exclusive choice IMO.
S.H.Figuarts MAJIN VEGETA -Exclusive Edition-
The Buu saga is one of my least favorite of the series, but this figure landed for me. The blue is a bit darker. Hair is translucent. Skin a bit darker. Paint on the face is sharper. The new Aura effect piece is great, I hope that gets used more down the road. This was also available with Super Saiyan 2 Goku from last year’s SDCC. You can peg lightning effects into the Aura, which adds some new flair to the shelves. Overall a really well done set, and again a good choice for an exclusive.
BONUS – S.H.Figuarts WORLD TOUR 2023 15TH ANNIVERSARY SUPER SAIYAN GOKU -Exclusive Edition-
This is NOT a SDCC 2023 exclusive, but it may be available at the show. It’s going to be sold at multiple in-person events throughout the year as a celebration of the 15th anniversary of S.H. Tamashii Nations. Check out the Tamashii Nations 15th Anniversary World Tour website for full details on the events. I had the setup for photos going and grabbed him back at the first stop in NYC, so figured I’d do some quick shots of him too.
This is a fancy pants version of the previously released Super Warrior Awakening figure. This, the Super Saiyn 2 Cell Saga Gohan, and Super Broly Vegeta are probably my favorite three figures from the line, and all 3 are getting special versions this year, so yay! All in all it’s a worthy upgrade. Skin tone is a bit darker, hair is translucent, and comes with the Aura effect piece. It’s been swapped into the shelf line up (I removed duplicates a bit ago, too many figures!)
BONUS – S.H.Figuarts SUPER SAIYAN FULL POWER GOKU
This is NOT a SDCC 2023 exclusive at all. He’s actually available at US brick and mortar retailers like Target and Barnes and Noble etc for a reduced price compared with others in the line, it’s a gateway figure to get people into the line. He’s been out a while, but this mold is what was used in the Gohan set, and I hadn’t opened him yet. So now I have! Very solid figure, good upgrade from the 2010 version, everyone needs a Super Saiyan Goku on their shelves :).
