Rica was employedthroughout her lifetime with Cummins Inc, Insurance Agencies, andNC Department of Transportation. Rica joined Greater MountHermon Baptist Church at an early age, and accepted Christ as her Lordand Savior under the leadership of Pastor J.O. Thorne.
Rica always did so much for so many, always willing to lend a helpinghad to anyone in need. She always went above and beyond, in cases likethis we sometimes find ourselves asking how the life of someone so“giving” could be cut so short. But through it all, we know God doesnot make any mistakes and his grace is sufficient.
For all those that knew her know that she was the “life of the party”.She brought joy to any room she walked in and knew no strangers.Singing, laughing, dancing, and having a good time are just a few of herattributes. Rica will be remembered for being that “person” for a hostof friends and family for advice about life, or simply a listening earwithout judgment.
She was very selective of who she confided in, especially about hersickness. Rica knew there was power in prayer, and sometimes we mayfeel that our prayers are going unanswered, but God hears all. God sawfit to take her home out of her suffering and removed her sickness. Hecalled her home. In that we must take solace that the God of the valleyis the same God of the Mountaintop.
She was preceded in death by her mother Mary “Sissy” Lancaster Cutler,Father Reginald “Grease” Earl Western, Sister: Laquasia Cutler; Grandparents: Willie James Western, Dorothy Harrison Western,Wilbert Winstead and Francis Winstead. Uncle and Aunt: DennisWestern and Iris Parker.

Sisters: AshleyCutler (of the home), Keya Cutler; Aunts: Lavern Winstead Jones,Katina Winstead Williams (Robert), Sharon Western. Nephews: ElijahWestern and Kaiden Leonard, Nieces: Zynia Grant, Zy’Kirah Grant,Makalya Western, and goddaughter Emoni Gunter.Rica played a big part in the lives of a few of her younger cousins, whooften looked to her for guidance and advice. Marquise, Gregory,Tene’sia, Shana, Robert (Man), Brittney and Bianca. To these youngercousins, Rica was more than just a cousin, she was somewhat of amentor. Rica also shared a special bond with a few other cousins inparticular: Erich “Donae”, Christopher “Phife”, Tamara, and Shakib. Additionally, she leaves behind a host of cousins, family, friends, andher special sisterhood “The Golden Girls” Latonya Gunter, MatishaLindsay, Leticia Harris, Suktia Lindsay, along with her close friendHaleeshia “Vette” Bynum.

We formed a longtime friendship and remained closefriends for over 30 years: Mary Ann Whitaker, Cynthia Smith Clapp, GlendaHorne Turner, and Nicole Perry. I’ll miss our fun times together, endless laughs, and phone conversations. I later moved to Fayetteville and furthered my educationat Fayetteville Technical College and Fayetteville State University. I did somesocial work studies at East Carolina University however, I obtained my master’s insocial work from North Carolina State University in Raleigh NC in 2018, and I’ma member of the NASW (National Association for Social Workers).
I loved flowers and although I didn’t have a favorite flower, I felt that the beauty offlowers made any room spectacular and gave the elite ambiance. At any giventime, when you visited me, you often would see a bouquet of live flowerssomewhere in my house. Among my many talents, were singing, playing the piano, and acting. Acting was truly an art to me. I always wanted to make it big, but it justnever happened. However, some of my local acting gigs included 2018 Blood donesigned my name, 2019 starring as Clairee in the stage play Steel Magnolias at theForest Moon Theater where I am also a member of the board. I was due to star asMama in the stage play a Raisin in the Sun at the Raleigh Little Theatre in 2020but the show was cancelled due to COVID. I was looking forward to starring inThe Color Purple in 2022 to play the part as Shug Avery but due to circ*mstancesbeyond my control I was unable to fulfill the obligation. My family and friendsalways said that I was a natural comedian because according to them there wasnever a dull moment around me. They said I always had something hilariously funny to say butI just never agreed. When it came down to baking, Betty Crockerhad nothing on me. I always tooted my own horn for making one mean pan ofbrownies. I unselfishly gave of my effort, time and talents to those things that mattered most.I was always eager to inspire and empower those who I met, and I always said youshould never stop doing what you’re passionate about.I strongly encouraged and advocated being kind and treating others right and oneof my favorite sayings was “if you do more and give more you’ll have more.”
I would say that I lived a purposeful life despite any unfortunate obstacles I faced.I worked extremely hard not only in my everyday work life but in my communityas well volunteering and trying to make a positive impact so that those paths Icrossed would remember I cared. Some of my volunteer work included being aphenomenal volunteer for the Citizens for Rhinehart campaign. I volunteered at theprecincts and educated citizens about who Shamieka Rhinehart was as a judicialcandidate and urged citizens to vote and have their voices heard. I would also giveMs. Rhinehart valuable feedback about the campaign team strategy. Most of all Iwas supportive in attending campaign events and being a constant supporter forShamieka Rhinehart’s elections as District Court judge and promoting other localpolitical candidates on area races.
I loved working in the caring field dedicating myself to help others and I touchedthe lives of many over the years. My most recent career positions included Directorof Social Work for Hillcrest Convalescence Center in Durham until my healthfailed me.
Previous jobs included Social Service Director at Sunnybrook Rehab Facility andScience teacher at Cardinal Charter Academy.
I’m sure you will all miss me but allow our fond memories to get you through eachpassing day. Don’t cry for me but know that I’m no longer suffering becausecancer didn’t win. Always remember me at the sound of laughter.
